Mātauranga Māori

Mātauranga Māori qualifications have been developed from a Māori perspective in consultation with local whānau, hapū, and iwi; and with the guidance and expertise of local Māori Governance and Working Groups.


We have three programs available:

  • L3 Tikanga commencing 30th Sept 2022
  • L4 Certificate in Rongoā Māori commencing March 2023
  • L5 Diploma in Rongoā commencing March 2024


All programs are for pupils 16 years and older.

Upon completion students gain an NZQA accreditation.


Below is a description and outline for each program.


Certificate in Tikanga

Partner Facilitation

Our partnership with TWoA enables us to upskill whānau (16 years and older) in our Northland community who would like to further their knowledge in Te Ao Māori. 


This qualification is for people who wish to develop some understanding of tikanga within a specialist field, founded on a Māori world view.


Tikanga is about purpose, practices and protocols, and you'll find it in every aspect of te ao Māori (the Māori world). 


This introductory programme gives you the foundations of understanding what tikanga is, why it exists, and how it manifests itself in practice.


Your local class will have a specialised delivery strand that brings foundational tikanga learning to life.


When you pass this programme, you'll get this qualification:

  • Te Pōkaitahi Tikanga (Mātauranga Māori) Kaupae 3 - NZ Certificate in Tikanga (Mātauranga Māori) Level 3

This course will cover: 

  • the traditional thinking behind tikanga and how it is applied in te ao Māori and the modern world
  • how to manage and apply the tikanga in a range of different contexts including leadership, problem solving and research
  • protocols and cultural practices that provide solutions to modern day problems.

You'll be able to:

  • explain cultural concepts where tikanga is practiced, as an expression of mana ao tūroa
  • use a range of te reo structures and tikanga practices, as an expression of mana reo
  • apply factual knowledge of tikanga concepts to explain own relationship to the physical world, as an expression of mana whenua
  • work collaboratively with others to carry out a range of tikanga practices and concepts, as an expression of mana tangata

This is a full-time programme that consists of 60 credits of learning over 20 weeks.  You will be required to attend 108 hours (an average of 6 hours per week) that may be made up of:


  • noho – usually Friday to Sunday
  • 1-day wānanga
  • kura whakaako

You’ll also need to participate in learning activities designed to enhance your learning for approximately:


  • 27 hours per week (on average)

Dates of your delivery schedule will be confirmed at enrolment. Some of the learning activities will need to be completed online.  You will need to have access to an internet-connected device for this programme.

All details regarding your learning are available within your kete which will be sent to you throughout the year.


To enrol in this programme, a potential student must:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • be a New Zealand citizen (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent resident
  • reside in New Zealand

Certificate in Rongoā

Our partnership with TWoA enables us to upskill whānau (16 years and older) in our Northland community who are  seeking to broaden their knowledge base in rongoā Māori.


Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is a uniquely Māori learning environment for everyone. TWoA provide holistic education opportunities of the highest quality for Māori, peoples of Aotearoa and the world.


With your new skills you'll be able to help your whānau and communities, local and regional bodies and agencies seeking to broaden their knowledge base in rongoā Māori.

Become a kaitiaki of our rongoā Māori and connect with the mātauranga (knowledge) of our tūpuna (ancestors) to address the wellness needs of today.


This programme will introduce you to the natural world of rongoā.


Learn about the customs and protocols that surround rongoā as you develop an understanding of the Māori world view. Be part of the revival of traditional and contemporary rongoā practices in Aotearoa, and gain insight and learn to know, appreciate, and respect rongoā but not yet use it or advise others on how to use it - that will take further study.


When you pass this programme, you'll get this qualification: 

New Zealand Certificate in Tikanga (Rongoā) Level 4

This course will cover: 

  • the relationship and differences between rongoā and hauora (health)
  • tikanga (Māori customs and practices) and te reo Māori associated with harvesting rongoā
  • relationships between ngā atua Māori and rongoā.

You'll be able to:

  • apply and integrate a broad range of tikanga concepts and practices, as an expression of mana ao tūroa
  • use a broad range of reo structures and tikanga practice, to enhance mana reo
  • apply theoretical knowledge of tikanga concepts to form and affirm relationships between people and the physical world, as an expression of mana whenua
  • reflect on and evaluate own practice of tikanga, to identify and self-manage strengths and weaknesses, as an expression of mana tangata

This is a full-time programme that consists of 120 credits delivered over 38 weeks. Throughout the programme you will be required to attend:


  • 1 x kura whakaako -compulsory classes (3 hours per week)
  • 8 x noho marae (23 hours per noho)
  • 4 x one-day wānanga (9 hours per wānanga)

In addition to these, you’ll be expected to complete learning activities designed to enhance your learning for:

  • approximately 24 hours per week.

Tauira will need to engage in the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa digital platform I-Akoranga throughout the programme. Internet access and a digital device is needed to enhance the tauira learning experience.


Entry Requirements: 

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • be a New Zealand citizen (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent resident
  • reside in New Zealand
  • hold a New Zealand Certificate in Tikanga Level 3 or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills

Diploma in Rongoā

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is a uniquely Māori learning environment for everyone. TWoA provide holistic education opportunities of the highest quality for Māori, peoples of Aotearoa and the world.


This qualification is for people who wish to develop a broad range of tikanga within a specialist field, founded on a Māori world view.



Here's your opportunity to take your current knowledge of rongoā to an advanced level by further developing your skills in our diploma programme. You'll deepen your understanding of rongoā Māori history and practices, and advance your knowledge and understanding by exploring the essence of the natural environment.


Become a kaitiaki of rongoā for future generations, supported by a nationally recognised qualification. 


When you pass this programme, you'll get this qualification:

  • New Zealand Diploma in Tikanga (Rongoā) Level 5

This course will cover: 

  • analysing rongoā models
  • WAI262 claim and how it influences rongoā Māori practice
  • rangahau (research)
  • preparing rongoā within a specific kaupapa
  • using te reo Māori to communicate tikanga practices
  • critiquing karakia and takutaku
  • applying your knowledge of tikanga concepts to the practice of rongoā

You'll be able to:

  • research, apply and evaluate cultural concepts that foster the development of existing and emerging mātauranga, to advance mana ao tūroa
  • articulate te reo to communicate tikanga practice and concepts, to advance mana reo
  • apply practical and theoretical knowledge of tikanga concepts and practices, in some familiar and unfamiliar environmental settings, as an epression of mana whenua
  • select standard and non-standard processes to develop a range of Māori leadership attributes and principles that applies to tikanga, as an expression of mana tangata


How you'll study:

This is a full-time programme that consists of 120 credits delivered over 38 weeks. Throughout the programme you will be required to attend:


  • 1 x kura whakaako - compulsory classes (3 hours per week)
  • 8 x noho marae (23 hours per noho)
  • 4 x 1-day wānanga (9 hours per wānanga)

You'll also need to complete learning activities designed to enhance your learning for:

  • approximately 25 hours per week

Tauira will need to engage in the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa digital platform I-Akoranga throughout the programme. Internet access and a digital device is needed to enhance the tauira learning experience.


To enrol in this programme, a potential student must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent resident
  • reside in New Zealand
  • have completed a Level 4 qualification in rongoā, and have a NZ Certificate in Tikanga Level 4, or 100 hours of rongoā practice approved by a rongoā practitioner affiliated to Te Kāhui Rongoā or a rongoā practitioner recognised by hapū/iwi
  • attend an interview
